Fenben powder is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic drug from the benzimidazole class. It is used in pets to treat gastrointestinal nematodes, lungworms and certain tapeworms. It works by disrupting the cellular structure of the parasite, causing them to die. It is a moderate-acting medication that should start to work within a few days, but it may take longer if the pet has preexisting conditions or other medications they are on. Your veterinarian may recommend routine fecal testing while your pet is on this medication to ensure that all internal parasites have been killed.
Veterinarians often prescribe compounded medications when there is a reason that the FDA-approved versions of the medication won’t be effective, or can’t be safely used by your pet. The medications are mixed by a licensed pharmacist on an individual basis for each patient. This allows us to use higher dosages and more specialized formulations for the unique needs of your pet. Compound medications are also used if your pet has difficulty taking pills in capsule form or is allergic to ingredients found in an FDA-approved medication.
